We are learning to: Understand the purpose of a piece of writing. 
  • Identify the purpose of each sentence below using your diagram. 


  1. I do not believe that the teenagers of today are any worse than previous generations.

Answer:  i’m neutral because i’m nearly a teenager but i don’t want to be smoking and stuff i want to be like a normal teenager.

  1. Please note that my son will be absent from school next week as he is having an operation.

Answer: why would you note your son if he going to be marked as absent. He going to be late anyway.

  1. Last Saturday, thousands of people turned out to celebrate ‘Christmas in the Park’. 

Answer: because people like to celebrate everything that christchurch  does

  1. Harry Baxter will be the best representative on the Student Council because he is the only one capable of new ideas.

  1. It is necessary to wear heatproof gloves when you take a hot, cast-iron pan out of the oven, because metal conducts heat.

  1. Some people believe that ruby is the greatest sport in the history of sport, while others give that title to ‘the beautiful game’, soccer.
